“I eat donuts and I know things” – Tyrion Lannister
That quote might be exactly what was said, but this Sunday night was the season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones. As the fans prepped their TVs and fed their dragons. I celebrated by journeying down to a quaint coffee shop to find my seat on the “Game of Thronut”.
Yes, you read that correctly, a Game of Thrones DONUT! For a limited quantity, the folks at Deviant Donuts concocted a delicious donut fit for the true ruler of Westeros.
The “Game of Thronut” donut had a red wine mousse with a black cocoa glaze. It also came topped with icy rock candy with a sword cookie. The flavours were DELICIOUS and could slay any White Walker.
This royal treat was found in Old Mystick Village from the bakers at Deviant Donuts. The gourmet donuts are sold on the weekends at Vault Coffee Roaster. These powerful sister companies created the perfect atmosphere for your morning donut and cup of coffee. Vault Coffee Roasters is a local shop that offers fresh hand roasted coffee. From Friday through Sunday, the shop features gourmet donuts from their sister company, Deviant Donuts.
After seeing Deviant Donut’s instagram post announcing the special edition “Game of Thronut” donuts, I decided I HAD to make the trip down to Mystic. It was the only proper reason for setting an alarm for 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday.
I woke up early to assure I would be able to try one of these special donuts, and when I arrived just after opening there was already of line of people ready for their morning treats. The entire time I was in the coffee shop, people were filing in to grab a celebratory donuts. Although the “Game of Thronut” donuts were limited to one per customer, that did not stop people from filling up their boxes with a variety of delicious treats.
The incredible thing about donut and coffee shops is that they are able to take something people love (donuts and roasted coffee) and create beautiful artwork to reflect aspects of their lives. These small independent businesses are able to really connect with their customers in fun and quirky ways. From Game of Throne themed donuts, to creating Harry Potter themed Butterbeer donuts, the folks down in Mystic find creative ways to connect with their audiences.
As Cersei Lannister said, “When you play the Game of Thronuts, or you die.”
Thank you to the lovely crew at Deviant Donuts and Vault Coffee for a great adventure!
